DRZ400 Helmet Lock Removal

The helmet lock is a heavy lump of steel that is rendered useless with many adventure riding luggage setups as it gets blocked by the luggage or pannier racks. Most riders tend to remove this, and so do I. It is a simple process, and below is how I do it.

Once the helmet lock is unscrewed, it exposes the helmet lock tab welded to the subframe.

The first step is carefully cutting the tab off with a cut off wheel, fitted to an angle grinder.

Next is carefully cleaning up the subframe where the cut was made, with a flap disc fitted to an angle grinder.

The finished result. The tab was cut off using a cut off disc, then the subframe was cleaned up using a flap disc. Job done!
